Sharply worded letter from CEO of Contra Costa Health tells refinery that her agency "will not tolerate unsafe business practices," lays out nine expectations; MRC says it is committed to safety
But does PBF/MRC “aspire” to be a good neighbor, Craig?
I do really feel like the county execs heard our cries, for once. I like that they made an unannounced visit to the refinery. Keeps them on their toes!
Thanks for this. Saw that Rick Hurd covered this in the East Bay Times also. The Chron and the Times have been great, so far. LA Times, also.
That's a good question, Marlene. I guess time will tell, but at this point, I don't see how they cannot do what is necessary to restore some trust if they want to remain a viable presence in this town.
I believe something is amiss with PBF's safety standards, but the jury is still out on exactly how significant the problem is. Until one of these investigations (some of which have now been going on for a year) turn up major deficiencies or problems, I think we're largely dealing with speculation. There have been too many incidents, to be sure, but none of these incidents have risen to the level of many other refinery accidents we have seen over the years, or even what happened down the road at Marathon last month. As someone who can see the refinery from my driveway, I'm concerned, but I'm not yet convinced that the facts and evidence have warranted the level of alarm and panic we've seen at times. There's no margin for error with this refinery because it's located smack in the middle of town, whereas Marathon and others can largely escape scrutiny when things go wrong at their places, and the reality with any refinery is that sometimes things are going to go wrong; that's just the nature of these beasts. The question is how often they should be expected and accepted and how severe. I'm worried at how often things have gone wrong at MRC, but I am relieved that those things haven't been nearly as bad as they could have been, and have been at other places over the years.
I guess I take a somewhat different stance. PBF’s laissez faire attitude has been very questionable and annoying. I just feel they’re up to something nefarious. Maybe it’s paranoia on my part but somethin’ ain’t right in Denver. Vigilance is key.
The original post had a bad link to the letter from CCH. Here is is the correct link:
