I appreciate your addition of "Making the National Local". My son is an adult now but I do remember worrying when he played high school football. Thank you for your newsletter!

My nephew as a young kid tried out for football and was immediately accepted. However, upon being hit very hard he quit. He's now 22 and says that he was glad he saved his precious head.

We know the evidence on traumatic brain injuries, which causes early onset dementia, depression, etc.

I'm actually amazed that it's a legal sport.

Yes, I do enjoy watching it ... I'm a 49er fan.

But, I also see dead people.

Look at poor Dwight Clark. His Lou Gherig's was likely from traumatic injuries.

Thanks for writing about this important issue. I can imagine in a few years the awareness will grow to reach a turning point. Hopefully before too long we will be as amazed as we are now that there were smoking-allowed areas in high schools some decades ago.

I hope you are right. There seemed to be some momentum behind this effort 10 years ago when the concussion/CTE crisis first gained widespread attention after years of being swept under the rug, but now it has seemed to fallen off people's radar, even though plenty of ex-football stars have been among the loudest advocates for ending youth tackle football. And for the most part, it's not a topic the mainstream media is interested in because football has become our national sports religion and that means money for them. It was sad driving by Alhambra High School this morning and seeing those young kids in helmets and pads.
