What happens to Llamas' school board seat if she wins this election? I seem to remember a situation before where a board member vacated after an election and this was seen as a widely unpopular move.

The board in all likelihood would appoint a replacement to fill out her term. They could also call a special election, but that almost never happens with board vacancies because of costs involved.

What is the appointment process? I really not not a fan of these scenarios.

Typically, they announce the vacancy and provide an opportunity for community members who live in the trustee area to apply. There's an application candidates fill out listing their qualifications, then an interview is held before the board at a public meeting where they're asked to answer a series of questions. The board then votes on the candidates. They had used a points system for years where the candidate who received the most votes automatically was appointed to the seat, but technically a majority of the remaining board (at least three) must agree on the appointment, which is what caused the chaos in 2021 during the process that ultimately led to the appointment of Carlos Melendez after the first appointment was deemed illegal because only two of the board members had voted for the winning candidate.
